I had an interview on Sunday Morning on RNZ yesterday about Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan, and her fashion archive. She was a trailblazing MP who had a love of fashion, and would commission local artists to design outfits for her. The great thing about Whetu’s style, was that it was totally focused on patterns and designs made here in New Zealand; something of a rarity in fashion, where trends would almost entirely originate from overseas. Her collection of around 50 outfits will be on show to the public in the exhibition ‘Travel in Style - Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan’ at the MTG Hawke's Bay. Says the MTG Hawke Bay, ‘She was also the first New Zealand politician who truly understood the power of fashion’. I don’t think anyone in the NZ Parliament has ever quite managed to encapsulate the use of fashion as Whetu did. I love those kaftans!
